What are the advantages of farm diversity (mixed crop and livestock)? Economic and ecological advantages?

Farm diversity is the key to sustainable agriculture. A diverse group of animals, with each supplying you with a product as well as manure for your crops. Rabbits can supply you with meat for the table as well as to sell and excellent manure for crops. Chickens for eggs and meat and manure, also can forage in your fields for insects. Goats are excellent animals for a sustainable farm. They can utilize areas of your land that might not be suitable for other uses. They give bush and weed control as well as meat and milk. Milk gives you a product that you can easily add value by making cheese and butter. Diversity of crops lending itself to crop rotation as well as supplying different products you will need such as wheat for bread, and straw for bedding or even bailed straw for building. Soybeans and/or Canola can be processed for oil to heat your house and farm buildings. It is also a legume crop that fits well into your crop rotation system. The byproduct makes a good protein sources for your animals. I could go on and on here, but you can see hoe you could become completely self sufficient while all the while not only be sustainable but building up your land.

First let me say congratulations. we do need more farmers as the family farm is going along the side of the road.
If u are buying and existing farm look at the equipment the prev owner had. U know for plowing u will need a good tractor and plow. a disc. planter. and cultivator. now as for the fruit. besides the tractor u will need a good spray rig for spraying the fruit trees. and pruning either after the season or early spring. most do this manually with help. as a suggestion watch your farming newspapers for auctions on used equip sales.alway count on your extension agent and all the help they offer. One last step watch your state many states now require a license to spray certain chemicals…Good Luck and dont give up…

I have a bell, jalapeno and serrano pepper plant in my garden. The plants are healthy but I have always had a problem with bugs eating the leaves. What is a good pesticide to use? I would prefer not to use any chemicals and was hoping to find a home remedy.

Pyretherins and insecticidal soaps are commercially available natural pesticides. One home remedy is three parts warm water, one part vegetable or horticultural oil, and a couple of drops of dish washing liquid. Mix it together and spray in on your plants once a week or so. Don’t use it during the hot sun since the oil can intensify the sun.

Certainly, he could do this. Chavez has done it in Venezuela and it has certainly leveled the playing field because now everyone is suffering from shortages, starvation is rampant, the currency is no longer worth anything except by the wheelbarrow full, but everyone is equal.

To start with, Horticulture is a part of Agriculture. Agriculture is a broad area that breaks down into many different sections, Horticulture is one of them, along with Agronomy (crop science and soil science), Flora-culture, Siliviculture, aquaculture, etc. Horticulture deals with production of vegetables, fruits, lawns and landscaping, etc. All parts of Agriculture are inter-related but separate in study and application.

How do the potential cost of transgenic crops differ from most of traditional costs associated with agriculture ,such as tractors and labor?
Hint: Who bears the costs:the farmer or others in society? Does this difference mean that we should think and act differently regarding these costs?

if there is some advantage to the crops, the farmer pays more for the seed, but gets a higher return on them. thus, the farmer comes out ahead, and everyone that is using less effective seeds has a disadvantage.

Other ventures like milky mushroom cultivation is also good.
