Pig Business – German Subtitles
Pig Business highlights four main impacts of factory farming operations.
Abusing animals : Every year 1.2 billion pigs worldwide are slaughtered for meat, of which more than half have been reared by industrial, intensive methods.
Destroying small farmers : Small independent farmers are relentlessly driven out of business by the economies of scale which large pig production systems can command.
Jeopardising our lives : It is not only animals which are harmed by factory pig farms. Intensive farming can put human health at risk as well.
Polluting the environment : The livestock sector is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global”. Livestock production, mostly factory farming, is expected to double across the globe by 2050.

Israel Boasts Agricultural Innovations
And in Israel, the agriculture industry is reportedly on the rise. An exhibition held last week in Tel Aviv featured the latest innovations, attracting visitors from all over the world. Our Israeli team has more.
With an average of 20,000 visitors in past years, the “Agro Mashov” exhibition hoped to open for new Israeli companies doors to sprouting international markets, mainly in eastern Europe and the Far East.
One company presented a biological method for reducing the population of flies which damage fruit.
[Sara Goldsmith, Logistics, Biofly]:
“What we are doing now, is mass rearing the fly and then we take the males which don’t damage the fruit, we sterilize them, and then we release those sterile males into the wild population, they mate with the wild females and then the females lay eggs that basically nothing comes out of these eggs.”
In another booth, the Jewish National Fund presented their latest efforts in blooming the desert.
[Dorit Sadovsky, Jewish National Fund]:
“Special people are finding solutions for the people how to grow in an area that is very hot, without water, sometimes salty water.”
But one of the main attractions was undoubtedly a wide variety of exotic fruits, recently developed by Israeli scientists
[Moshe Weiss, CEO, Israeli Exotic Food Association]:
“Some of the fruits are just grown as they are, but some of the fruits that have potential to become commercial fruits are being tested for better varieties. The game here in Israel is not to conquer the world but to bring the fruits sooner or later than the season where they are naturally grown.”
Flowers were also on display. Two of Holland’s biggest flower auctions who recently merged with one another chose to hold the merging ceremony at the exhibition.
[Janet Fronrard, New Flora Holland]:
“The reason that we are now in Israel in this “Agro Mashov” is that a big part of our import of flowers comes from Israel.”
After investing $0.5 million in the exhibition, its organizers hope it would yield no less than $4 million worth of business deals.

World Business: Japanese Agriculture 03/12/0210
World Business: Japan’s agriculture sector accounts for a tiny fraction of the economy, yet has always wielded enormous clout over the Japanese government. Farm policy has in many ways been an unmitigated disaster for Japan, and threatens to further hobble a country already entering its third decade of stagnation.
