ABC 7 NEWS REPORT, September 28, 2006

The Dervaes family runs Path to Freedom, an urban homesteading project, in Pasadena. Since the ’80s the family has transformed their city lot into an organic permaculture garden. The yard features more than 350 varieties of plants which are either edible or used for other purposes. The garden supplies the family with their food year round. The family sells some of their greens to local restaurants. Doing this gives them money to purchase solar panels and energy efficient appliances. The solar panels provide their home with power and they use a solar oven to cook food on sunny days.
(Note: news segment mistakenly mentions the goats were producing milk. They ARE dairy goats and can produce milk, but like all mammals, they only lactate when pregnant or nursing babies. We haven’t bred our two goats yet. )

Albert Straus, proprietor of the Straus Family Creamery, details the process by which his farm converts cow manure into electricity.

—–

Recent press coverage of the dairy industry has been less than positive: lack of access to pasture, use of antibiotics and genetically modified feed have all made headlines.

Albert Straus, the creator and owner of the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi, will present his holistic and sustainable approach to dairy farming.

He will share his views and successes on how he is making his business more sustainable – The Commonwealth Club of California

Albert Straus is the president and owner of Straus Family Creamery, the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi, in Marin County, California.Straus has been close to dairy farming throughout his life. He grew up on the farm in Marshall, California that his father, William Straus, started in 1941 with 23 cows. After going to college at California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo, where he wrote his senior thesis on creamery operations, he returned to the family farm. He currently has a herd of 300 cows — most are Holstein, some are cross-breeds of Holstein and Jersey.

‘Mock News’ Agriculture: Precision Farming Takes Root

You use Intel in your PC, but did you know Intel chips are inside loads of common devices? Our chips can teach you how to workout, help control home energy use and even grow tomatoes. The possible places you might find Intel are endless!

To show some of the non-PC uses for the Atom and Core processors you know and love, we created a few fun new videos that show a snapshot of some of the amazing things Intel chips are doing today by helping everyday devices get smarter. As our goal was to educate and entertain, we follow a mock-investigative news reporter as he discovers this brave new and intelligent world.

In this video, (mock) reporter Chad Bradley finds out about one advantage for the low-power, high-performance Intel Atom processor: precision farming. Intel Atom provides an ideal way to make any number of devices smarter from digital cinema cameras and media phones to trains and even precision farming tractors.

Organic Farming Part II – ‘Cow dung to biogas’

Like many organic farmers, Jose Elanjhimattam is both a practical and abundantly resourceful man. Starting with cow dung, Jose has created an ingenious system that simultaneously captures and separates nitrogen-rich organic manure and methane gas. Unlike dried cow dung, which tends to lose nitrogen throughout the drying process, the liquefied organic manure produced through Joses slurry provides soil with far higher levels of nitrogen. Additionally, the methane gas removed is used as a form of fuel. Jose estimates that the dung from two cows is sufficient to provide enough biogas to support the cooking requirements of a family of four. Resourceful, intelligent, simple great stuff!
