Hear from a distinguished panel of experts about the nature and magnitude of the potential harm and what we can do about it – The Commonwealth Club of California

Tyrone Hayes is a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology, UC Berkeley. His research focuses on the role of steroid hormones in amphibian development and he conducts both laboratory and field studies in the U.S. and Africa. Recent press coverage of the dairy industry has been less than positive: lack of access to pasture, use of antibiotics and genetically modified feed have all made headlines.

Albert Straus, the creator and owner of the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi, will present his holistic and sustainable approach to dairy farming.

He will share his views and successes on how he is making his business more sustainable – The Commonwealth Club of California

Albert Straus is the president and owner of Straus Family Creamery, the first certified organic dairy west of the Mississippi, in Marin County, California.Straus has been close to dairy farming throughout his life. He grew up on the farm in Marshall, California that his father, William Straus, started in 1941 with 23 cows. Fred Kirschenmann: The Future of Agriculture-Part 1

Visit us on the web for more video stories, and information: Cooking Up a Story (http://cookingupastory.com). Fred Kirschenmann steadfastly warns us, conventional agriculture, and its heavy dependence upon fossil fuels, and irrigated water, simply will not continue to offer a viable means for feeding the world. We have been drawing upon natures reserves of stored energy (hydrocarbons) and water resources at unsustainable rates, and those finite resources are diminishing rapidly; technology alone, will not provide substitute solutions. The argument that conventional agriculture (modern industrial farming) is necessary in order to meet the needs of a growing global population, simply ignores the realities of the elephants in the room. Sustainability, with an emphasis upon the concept of resiliency, and a renewed respect for maintaining the fertility (quality) of the soil, is to Kirschenmann now, the foundation of a new food system toward creating a food revolution.
