Arboriculture is the science and art of caring for trees. The courses East Durham College offers covers the cultivation, management and study of individual trees, shrubs, vines and other perennial woody plants. It is a science and practical based subject that is taught at the The College’s Houghall campus. The campus is an impressive 400 acre estate with has its own arboretum and pinetum (which is a collection of trees, many of which are very rare on the Houghall estate). There is also a variety of wetland, farmland and fields which are available to students and ideal for both studying and practical work.
The arboriculture industry is one that is expanding very quickly and there are lots of job opportunities for professionally qualified arborists, and many of these are well paid. As an example of the kind of jobs that these qualifications lead into, we have had past students working in tree surgery, woodland managements, timber processing and becoming commercial arborists.
The courses are taught with a series of modules and an equal mix of theoretical and practical sessions, including lectures, seminars, practicals and fieldwork. There are also work placements that are available and can give students experience in the reality of working within their chosen field, and they can find out the specific job role they would like to pursue. Work experience also provides students with skills that today’s employees are looking for, to give students every change of getting the employment they want once their education has come to an end. The College has many partner organisations across the North East and beyond to ensure work placements are enjoyable and successful.
The Houghall campus is the ideal environment for students to learn and develop their skills. We are located on the outskirts of Durham and is highly respected within land based industries. Many other courses run alongside the Arboriculture and Forestry courses in many aspects of agriculture and animal management. The College is state of the art and has a range of specialised arboriculture machinery, labs, decay detection equipment and tree inventory software.
There are many specialist skills which are required to become successful within the arboriculture and forestry industry and these are all taught and developed on the East Durham College courses. These include tree identification, disease recognition, strength for tree climbing and the ability to work well within a team. During your time on the course students will also learn skills which prepare them for the workplace to ensure they are ready and have the right attitude for the workplace.
