Crop Mob to Spence Farm – 10/10/10 Global Work Party with 350.org 2/3
Farmers Marty and Kris Travis of Spence Farm discuss organic farming and the seasons on the farm with 30+ “crop mobbers” who came to help with the harvest as part of the 350.org 10/10/10 Global Work Party. It was a beautiful, unseasonably warm day in Fairbury, IL. The Crop Mob had just finished harvesting the Travis’ organic sorghum.
Spence Farm is 100 miles south of Chicago in Livingston County and was first settled in 1830. The Travis Family; Marty, Kris, and Will, are direct descendants of the original settlers. The farm supplies leading restaurants in Chicago like Frontera Grill and Blackbird with specialty produce and Iroquois corn. The Travises commitment to sustainability is evident in their dedication to preserving heritage crops and animal breeds that are being lost to our predominantly industrial farming system.
Conventional agriculture accounts from 18 to 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Organic and sustainable farms like Spence Farm do not use the chemical and carbon-based inputs of conventional farms and are an important part in solving our climate crisis.
Because the farms are typically family owned and operated, most of the labor is done by hand. The term “Crop Mob” was coined by city dwellers who have an interest in sustainable agriculture and would like to help more than just by going to the farmer’s market or joining a CSA. The “Crop Mob” gives the farmer(s) a valuable source of volunteer labor.

Sunday Satsang 11/23/2008: Sustainable Rural Community
http://esotericteaching.org This is a very important Satsang because we talk about the future direction of our community. The present materialistic civilization is called ugra-karma, sinful or unnecessary work. The next phase of our spiritual community will be to develop a sustainable rural agricultural community and varṇāśrama spiritual university based on the mode of goodness and karma-yoga. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed us to train brāhmaṇas and to protect cows, live simply in harmony with the land and God.
We already have a nice online community and a small urban āśram, but we need to develop further toward fulfilling Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions. So the next stage will be fundraising and developing a plan for the rural community. My vision is to host international conferences in sustainable agriculture. This will attract people with valuable expertise in these areas—knowledge that would take us years to acquire. We can give these people a taste of spiritual life, and if they like it, they can stay and help us. We also will hire local people, experienced agriculturalists and share knowledge with them.
